Chapter 19
Anna turned her head to survey the packed ballroom. Sheâd seen sardines in nets that werenât packed together as tightly as the throng collected in the Farthingtonâs ballroom tonight. It wasnât a small room by any means, which only made the crowded room feel even more overwhelming. It was as if everyone in the Marlborough Set had accepted the invitation to the ball.
She flinched as a woman standing nearby laughed at something her companion had said. It was a twittering sound sheâd come to hate because Lady Margaret always laughed the same way. Anna gritted her teeth at the thought of the woman. Lately sheâd been hearing rumors that Sebastian was on the verge of proposing to Lady Margaret, and she hated how it made her feel every time someone mentioned it.
Lady Harding was right, the woman would never make him happy. But she wasnât sure who could. The sudden sound of someone calling her name pushed through her thoughts, and Anna turned toward the voice. The sight of Charlotte Plummer pushing her way through the crowd made Anna smile.
The two of them had struck up a conversation about the Rosetta Stone the day Sebastian had taken her to the museum. When theyâd crossed paths several weeks later at one of the soiréeâs sheâd attended, Anna had been hesitant to say more than a couple of polite words to Charlotte, knowing she was Lady Margaretâs niece.
But when the two of them had met by chance at the museum several days later, theyâd struck up a conversation about Egyptian and Roman history. Charlotte was nothing like her aunt, which had been Annaâs biggest concern. Since their second meeting, the two of them had become good friends.
Outgoing and quite pleasant, Charlotteâs love of history was as avid as Annaâs, and it made the young woman easy to talk to. Lady Margaret was never mentioned when the two of them spoke. A fact for which Anna was grateful because she was certain sheâd not be able to keep from saying something rude about Charlotteâs aunt.
While her friend had never said anything derogatory about her aunt, Anna had seen Charlotteâs eyes flash with annoyance whenever Lady Margaret arrogantly gestured for her niece to remove herself from Annaâs presence. A wide smile on her sweet face, Charlotte came to a halt in front of her and immediately kissed Anna on the cheek. She then stepped back to eye Anna with a mischievously critical glance before laughing.
âPerfect, as always. I so admire your ability to wear such rich colors.â Charlotte stared down at her own gown with a woebegone look. âI hate wearing all these pastels Aunt Margaret insists I wear.â
Anna winced at her friendâs observation, and Charlotte shook her head with disgust.
âThereâs no need to say a word. I know exactly why Aunt Margaret makes me wear such unflattering dresses. She doesnât want anyone to know Iâm much older than she says.â Anger flared in the young womanâs eyes as she looked across the room.
